Those that can-do, those that can’t-teach
It’s an old adage but the best coaches are not necessarily always the best ex-players. Some of the best managers in football have had pretty average playing careers and there have been some spectacular flops in high profile players screwing up as managers. (Think Paul Gascoigne – Kettering)
Anyway, with Allan Donald applying for the England bowling coach role, does the fact that he was one of the world’s best fast bowlers necessarily make him the right man for the coaching role?

I’m hoping that the best type of coach is someone who was a middling player and Roger Harper does well for us in Kenya.
I would’nt be surprised, however, if Donald did work out all right, he always had a good name for his professionalism rather than just relying on talent like Gazza.
As long as he isn’t going to teach running between the wickets, you should be fine…

Yep, running was never his strong point.
I’m keen to see how Roger Harper works out. Just seen on your blog that he’s having his first meeting with the players on Thursday

No maybe he won’t be a great teacher, but I see where Phil Defreitas has now put his hand up for the job - so, continuing along the lines of your headline, what a teacher he would make
