Guwahati rioting explained

In light of the mayhem in Guwahati it would be quite tempting to ponder the factors that conspire to come together to ignite a riot. Tempting to try some serious analysis of what turned a cricket crowd into a frustrated angry throng.

Tempting to discuss the relevance of the socioeconomic factors affecting the region including the use of mandatory clichés drawing comparisons between religion and sport.

But doing all that would require a sharper head than I possess this Monday morning so instead I’ll just cut to the chase and tell you what really tipped the crowd over the edge in Guwahati.

A group of supporters planted a crop of red and green chillies in the earth outside Nehru Stadium. They did this to ward off the rain spirits and ensure they could pick up their bets at the local underground bookies as they hadn’t covered the abandoned match in the spread bet.

However, due to the excessive moisture in the air and the particular soil the chillies were planted in, a pungent and strongly hallucinogenic aroma intoxicated the spectators as they walked by that particular section of the ground.

The effects of the poison chilli gas gradually started to take hold, until the supporters were helpless against its mind altering hallucinogens and eventually had no choice but to start burning, breaking, smashing and destroying everything they could get their hands on.

The chillies have since been unearthed by staff from the GCCC (Guwahati Centre for Chilli Control) and placed inside safe storage.

Errr..Chris..if you didn’t write “An Irish Pom muttering on Cricket,” I was surely going to think that you were an Indian. How did you get all these Indian news from these obscure Indian internet papers!? Want to please share your trick with me??

I have been waiting long from you for an article on BCCI gaining 1 billion dollar - your thoughts and analysis. Nothing!?

Too much time spent trawling the internet!, as for the billion dollar men of the BCCI, I’ll get there!

I actually wanted to respond to your comment on our last discussion before I do anything else but time is an enemy this week.
