Domestic crowd trouble

The State Championship final (aka the centre piece of the New Zealand domestic cricket calendar) between Wellington and Central Districts saw crowd trouble yesterday at the basin reserve.

The trouble was, there was no crowd.

The attendance apparently peaked at 30 but for most of the days were in single figures. I’m not at all surprised by this, but I was thinking about what it must be like for the players, to turn up for a final, an alleged important final, that very well may be the highlight of your whole career, and to play in front of 10 people. Hell, that means even the wives and girlfriends stayed away.

It must be a very shallow feeling for the players.

How do they generate money then? Sponsorship? Why do they agree to sponsor a game where there is no crowd?

TV rights I should imagine primarily.
