Buttony Things

Did he do it for the spondoolies?

Allan Donald has pulled his application from the England bowling coach role after talks with Cricket South Africa. There are some possible explanations to his actions.

1. He wanted a full time position with SA all along but they wouldn’t front the cash.
2. He was coaxed into applying without thinking it through
3. Cricket SA found a clause in his existing contract that was breached when he made his application for the England job
4. He found twangs of Nationalistic loyalty after getting a heads up that he was not the front runner
5. Phil Defreitas put the frighteners on him

Okay, I know that some of these are really unlikely (like 2.) but something changed his mind……thoughts?

I would be very surprised if it wasn’t three.

I reckon it could be a combination of 1 and 4, though I agree 3 is also likely.
I can remember when Clyde Rathbone defected to Australia in the Rugby how ‘popular’ that made him in South Africa. I would say Donald might have been a bit surprised by the backlash of opinion perhaps?

I guess he probably felt a bit undervalued by the South African cricket board, and when somone suggested he should go for it he thought’why not?’

The chat with Vincent van der Bijl probably reassured him, when Donald was told that South Africa thought he was doing a good job.
