BCCI Baton Cops Crush Infants
Apparantly this is the real meaning of the acronym, BCCI. Not the Board of Control for Cricket India, but the cops who wielded their batons and injured a nine year old boy and his mum in the process.
If this report is accurate, then it would appear that the baton charge by police at the Nahar Singh Stadium was unnecessary to say the least. If anyone was there and stumbles across this blog, please do leave comments and explain what actually happened.

It is actually a girl and a mother (from whatever reports I have read):
Read this: http://www.telegraphindia.com/archives/archive.html
and Pratyush’s ideas here: http://www.sportolysis.com/2006/04/02/boycott-indian-cricket-it-is-about-time/
I didn’t get a clear picture, but this is what happens in India, ok: there is a limite number of seats always available. But somehow more tickets are sold (either through black market or god knows how)!!! Then there is always a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGEEEEEEEE queue (especially nowadays as you can’t take anything inside the stadium and I guess police search the people). So, all these - less ticket, more spectators, huge line, etc - lead to lots of rumours and commotions and people try to gate crash or they become hot-tempered. Police try to control the crowd by swinging their baton without any consideration or beating people up.
You might wonder why this happens? Then, please read the comment I left on Pratyush’s page (sportsolysis) and you will get some idea. Very very unfortunate. Of course, there is a BIG reason why we have such attitudes, but this blog is not a place to discuss.

Oh! I forgot to mention that you will get some idea, some pictures, etc, from those two reports, but not the whole story.

“there is a BIG reason why we have such attitudes, but this blog is not a place to discuss.”
Sure it is, we can talk about whatever we like (my blog, my rules ;-))
I read your comment and Pratyush’s response at Sportolysis and (forgive me) you seem harsh on your own culture/countryfolk.
I’m interested to know what makes you think that there is an acceptance of poor conditions in the areas you refer to.

Hi Chris, I shall get back to you later. It will take some time to explaining. I was trying just now to give a concise answer; failed; will work on it and get back to you asap.

As promised, here goes (hopefully a long story short):
1. First of all, we often are very much influenced by spiritualism and thus all these ideas of “what’s the use of all these mundane things,” “what’s the use of these life,” “don’t try to collect anything in life,” and bla..bla..(i guess you got the picture)
2. Secondly, from very early childhood (almost babyhood), we are brought up in a very strict way - parents scold and often beat (mild, like little slaps or just a box of ear); we are brainwashed to excel in academics (if you are a boy, then the exception can be that you will be brainwashed and pushed forward to become a cricketer - no, not making up; it’s true; cricket and cricketers are worshipped like anything there) and become engineers and doctors. So, we are not much provided with all the materialistic goods (that you often see in the Western children; we get perhaps a doll and a teaset for a girl and a cricket bat/ball and a football for a boy. Of course, we will be provided with lots of books, painting and music materials, etc…because our parents want us to become academicians, musicians, painters!!!!) even if the parents are filthy rich. So, #1(above) becomes stronger as we grow
3. Thirdly, because either of #2 (that is the strict way we are brought up) or because it has been simply our culture since time immemorial, we simply have too much respect for authorities.
So, all the above three combined have made us into something that we act philosophically and accepts many things which would be heavily questioned everywhere, and also carry ourselves like that.
Or perhaps those 1-3 are simply wrong, and we are so tired with all the heat, humidity, population, pollution, corruption, long traffice jams in the road, chaos and struggle for the day to day existence, that we loose the courage, energy, everything to ask any questions and accept the small mundane thing which are not that important in life as they come.
That is why whenever you hear/read/see anything related to India, all you see are the dirty roads and slums and squalors and etc…Yeah, true, we’ve a large poverty, huge population, but we have almost any natural resources you can imagine with huge arable land, in fact, so much so that if we plan properly, question everything and thus get rid off corruption and corrupted politicians, we can easily become one of the most developed and rich nation.
Not sure whether you are getting anything - very complicated to explain in writing (espeically by someone whose mother tongue is not English :D). Hopefully you are getting something. Stop here as the story has become looongg…:D
