When cricket really is life or death
With Tatenda Taibu in hiding from Robert Mugabe’s henchman, I guess it puts the game of cricket into some kind of perspective. The ‘business’ of sport should never put lives at risk.
But here it clearly has and the ICC will not step in and take control of the growing disaster in Zimbabwe cricket. To do so, they say, is beyond their remit. They may only intervene at the request of the domestic governing body.
Please Mssrs. Mani, Speed and Sonn, do not hold your breath waiting for Zimbabwe cricket to call you, I fear you may never again breathe oxygen into your lungs.
This, (according to the ICC mission statement on their website) is the role of the ICC..

If the ICC were intent on protecting the spirit of the game they would find a way to intervene and take control of the catastrophic management of the game in Zimbabwe and deal with the associated and potentially dire consequences.
To blame inaction on bureaucracy is lame in the extreme. As a governing body of the sport, they should rewrite the rule that prevents them from intervening, and then take action.
This of course requires strong and courageous leadership, which are qualities that I suspect are in short supply.

or perhaps no money can be made from protecting the spirit of the game in this circumstance!

It’s been this ridiculous for a while though … I’m more inclined to blame a world body rather then ICC … when things got bad in SA … it was the common wealth (correct me, good chance of this) that first decided on isolation for SA from international sport - zim from what I remember have pulled out from common wealth (or have they not?) so I suppose the job’s now down to the UN - if Zimbabwe is a member of that … my knowledge in such respect is severely restricted.

I just think that the ICC have a responsibility to act and to at least try and take control of this situtaion. There are so many other factors in Zimbabwe that it will be a politically charged job, but in terms of the running of the game at least the ICC should intervene.

Yes, I don’t like the way the ICC keep shying away from adressing this problem more seriously by just saying what happens politically in that country is not their buisness. They should do more. If they don’t want to ban Zimbabwe alright, but at least they should try and get into some talks with the ZCU and get let them know that they’re not happy with the situation.
