Reverse Swing…Old School

Freddie and Jonesy have given us all a cracking demo on how to get the relatively new ball reversing like an Aussie at a press conference.

But let’s hark back a decade or two and remember with fondness the correct way to get the dulling nut dipping at pace into the right-handers pads, shiny side in…. Thanks to Imran, Athers, Wasim and Waqar but most of all Kapil, the first true exponent of that wickedly late inducker.

Gone are the days when Coke and Pepsi were more than just sponsors. Their bottle tops were a key ingredient in the reverse swinging movement, leaving indelible marks on the side of scuffed up balls and perplexed Poms.

Gone are the days when a fistful of dirt would cling to the sweaty palm of a camera-unaware English Skip.

Gone are the days when Brylcreem was a fast bowlers best friend.

And gone are the days when it was mandatory in the subcontinent to grow your Araldite strengthened thumbnail into a ball cutter worthy of an enraged American housewife.

How sad that this new breed of players rely on nothing more than seam position and skill to reverse the ball. Aaah, those were the days.
