Ian Healy’s great idea
Umpire B Doctrove just made a great decision on the final day of the Perth test. Standing strong against a vociferous appeal from Warne and company, the umpire correctly ruled that the turning leggie marginally pitched outside leg.
Ian Healy commenting on the game, made a great observation;
“A great use of technology would be for the third umpire to radio down to Doctrove and let him know he just made a great decisionâ€
Healy’s point was that the umpire may be wondering whether he ruled correctly or not in the face of such a strong appeal. To be informed that he called correctly would be a great confidence boost.
Of course there is a down side to this suggestion. Namely that if the practise gets adopted and the umpire’s radio goes silent after a close call then he knows he made a stinker!

Doctrove gave a dodgy one today, I don’t think Ashwell Prince was out lbw to Warne. The ball seemed headed over the stumps and seemed to me that it would have missed leg. Thankfully South Africa survived. Actually I don’t really like South Africa, but it is nice to see that a side can suffer poor decisions (including the Ponting one in Australia’s first inngs) in Australia and yet draw the game.

Overall though I thought he (Doctrove) had a reasonable game. Who’d be an umpire these days?
